Description

ጃገማ ኬሎ – የበጋው መብረቅ” (Jagama Kello: The Summer Lightning) is a highly acclaimed biography written by Fikremarkos Desta, focusing on the life of one of Ethiopia’s most legendary patriots and military leaders.

Lieutenant General Jagama Kello, famously nicknamed “The Summer Lightning” (የበጋው መብረቅ) by the Italian forces because of his lightning-fast and unexpected guerrilla attacks.

Core Narrative & Themes

The book chronicles Jagama Kello’s extraordinary life, starting from his youth:
  • The Patriot (Arbegna): At only 15 years old, Jagama refused to surrender to the Italian fascists. He led a small group of rebels in the forests of Ginchi and Jeldu, eventually commanding a force of over 3,000 patriots.
  • Military Brilliance: It details his strategic mind—how he operated without formal military training to outmaneuver modern European weaponry.
  • Post-War Service: The biography also covers his later years as a high-ranking General in the Ethiopian National Defense Force and his role during the 1960 attempted coup and the Ogaden War.
  • Personal Character: Fikremarkos captures Jagama’s famous integrity, his deep loyalty to Emperor Haile Selassie, and his legendary bravery (he was famously wounded many times but never retreated).
