Born in Mankusa in the Gojjam region of Ethiopia, Bewketu studied psychology at Addis Ababa University, where he developed his literary voice and began publishing his work. In 2000, a year after graduating, he published his first collection of poems, Nwari Alba Gojowoch (Unmanned Houses), marking the beginning of a prolific literary career.

Bewketu’s work has received both national and international recognition. He was honored as the Ethiopian Best Novelist of the Year in 2008 and Best Young Author in 2009 — prestigious acknowledgments of his impact on Ethiopian letters.

His writings have been translated and published in prominent literary journals around the world, including Callaloo, World Literature Today, Modern Poetry in Translation, Prairie Schooner, and Poetry Review. A bilingual Amharic-French edition of his selected poems, Cantique de la Nuit, was published in 2020 by Éditions Dumerchez.

Bewketu has also served as a Research Fellow at Brown University (2015–2016) and as an ICORN Writer-in-Residence at City of Asylum Pittsburgh (2019–2021), underscoring his international literary presence and influence.
