Half a Knife: An Amhara Resistance Writer’s Reckoning

What happens when a cause is just, its human cost is immense, and its methods still fall short of freedom?

Half a Knife is a documented political memoir from inside the Amhara resistance. An engineer and former university dean, Baye Teshager Asmamaw spent seven years writing under the pen name Neakutoleab, a name carrying the charge let it be proclaimed. Across Ethiopia, Italy, and the United States, he argued, organised, broadcast, and helped build media institutions for a movement he believed was defending his people’s life and dignity. This is his account of what that work achieved, what it cost, what it taught, and where it went wrong.

From the 2016 Gondar uprising and the diaspora campaign for U.S. House Resolution 128 to the June 2019 assassinations, Mai-Kadra, and the war in northern Ethiopia that engulfed Amhara, Afar and Tigray, the book enters campaign rooms, media studios, Facebook networks, fundraisers, survivor interviews, and the internal arguments that shaped the movement’s public story.

Drawing on more than three thousand dated posts and essays, as well as letters, broadcasts, contemporaneous records, human-rights reporting, and firsthand testimony, Asmamaw examines how rumour outran fact; how diaspora activism amplified both courage and division; why organisations built around urgency and individual sacrifice repeatedly collapsed; and how a defensive cause came to rely on strategies unequal to its political aims. Where memory and reliable records disagree, the records govern, and the author applies that standard to his own errors.

Yet this is not a declaration that the cause was false or that the work achieved nothing. The movement reclaimed the Amhara name, challenged exclusion, carried its case into Washington, and organised humanitarian relief with transparent public accounting. Those gains were real. But thousands of lives were lost, institutions fractured, and the people the movement sought to defend continue to suffer.

Neither celebration nor renunciation, Half a Knife is testimony, reckoning, and a field manual from inside a struggle that consumed many of its own. It asks not whether the Amhara have the right to defend their lives, but how that right can be pursued through strategies capable of bringing the next generation closer to freedom, equality, democracy, and peace.
